I use EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard to recover files from RAW partition, if you encounter “The drive is not formatted.Do you want to format it now?” You could try this data recovery software to recover RAW photos/pictures/Images from RAW partition.

western digital my book external hard drive everything is gone didn’t do a back up my computer does not recognize my usb device.I can get it to install but it just says local disk H not WD disk like it used to. If the drive is being displayed as unallocated or allocated with a RAW filesystem in disk management (start -> run -> diskmgmt.msc), then it is probably because of a corrupt filesystem or partition table.
If that is the case, TestDisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk) may be able to recover the partitions and data.

I reformatted my HDD the other day as i felt it was too messy and it would be easier to format it than go round deleting everything. After formatting silly me realised i needed some documents that were on the HDD i formatted. I'm on Windows XP and I need to get the files back. I need free software. Any suggestions. I know my stuff with computers to be fair so any free programs would be very much appreciated

If you formatted your computer, the files may be gone forever. Which is on the warning you get before you go through with the format.
Whenever I need a free program, my first stop is always www.download.com and then www.freewarefiles.com I hope these sites can help you.
